DANGERS OF ALTERNATIVE ENERGIES
COOKING/ HEATING:
Barbecues and camp stoves are just two ideas for alternative cooking (for out
-door use only). If you use a non-electrical alternative heating device, make
sure it is approved for indoor use and follow manufacture's operating instructions.
Ensure there is adequate ventilation to prevent build up of carbon monoxide,
other gases, or smoke inside the home. Never use barbecues or any similar outdoor
cooking appliance in your home since the fumes these create can kill you.
CANDLES:
Never leave a lighted candle unattended. Do not attempt to use a
candle as a night light.
MATCHES / LIGHTERS:
Children are fascinated with fire and may play with matches. Be sure to keep
all matches and lighters in a safe place, out of the reach of children.
DANGER OF SMOKE:
In case of home fires that may trap you, it is a good precaution to keep water
in plastic bottles in bedroom closets for dampening materials to block smoke
and to use over mouth and nose in an escape. Be sure to instruct your children
how to do this in your fire drills.
SMOKE DETECTORS:
Install battery operated smoke detectors - test regularly. Some people do not
understand the effects of smoke on their breathing. Smoke can kill people while
they are sleeping. It is estimated 80% of home fire deaths could be avoided
through proper installation and maintenance of smoke detectors.
FIRE EXTIGUISHER:
If you have a fire extinguisher, be sure you know how to use it. Know how and
when to use them and when to get out of your home. Keep in convenient location
near an exit.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES:
Have an escape plan. Practice it. Have alternate routes if
main escape route is blocked. Be sure to have an outdoor meeting place that
everyone knows exactly where it is.
